DESCRIPTION:IAN MICHLER\nBirding & Travel Beyond: Morocco\, Ghana\, and Angola\n16 July 17:45 for 18:00 – Plettenberg Bay Country Club\n  \n“I have recently spent time in Morocco\, Ghana and Angola. Despite their geographic differences – Morocco in North Africa\, Ghana in West Africa\, and Angola straddling southern and central Africa – all three countries offer unique habitats that support an incredible variety of bird species\, including many endemics and migratory birds. They are also worthwhile travel destinations. \nMorocco is known for its varied landscapes\, from the Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert to coastal wetlands. These regions host species such as the Northern Bald Ibis\, Moussier’s Redstart\, and Desert Sparrow\, as well as countless European migrants during the spring and autumn flyways. It’s also a fascinating destination for those interested in culture and history. \nGhana\, on the other hand\, offers lush tropical rainforests\, savannahs\, and coastal lagoons\, creating a haven for over 750 bird species. Key birding sites include Kakum National Park\, with its famous canopy walkway\, along with various other parks and reserves to see the regions Guinea-Congo Forests specials. In the North\, there is Mole National Park that covers the Sahelian specials. Birders to Ghana can expect a high number of lifers with the white-necked rockfowl\, brown-cheeked hornbill\, African piculet\, fire-bellied woodpecker\, red-fronted antpecker\, and blue cuckooshrike being just some of the many highlights. \nAngola offers a little of everything: coastal desert\, dry savannah\, and various forms of woodland forest types. Species highlights include the Angola cave-chat\, red-crested turaco\, red-backed mousebird\, and Swierstra’s spurfowl.” \nAbout our speaker\nIan Michler\, a graduate of the Sustainability Institute\, Stellenbosch University\, has spent over 35 years working across Africa as a tourism operator\, environmental photojournalist\, wilderness guide and ecotourism consultant. He has published several natural history and travel books on Africa\, and his environmental and travel writing has appeared in publications around the world.
