Leermansdrift Walk

29 March 2025

Trip Report

by Stephan van Wyk

We kicked off the morning bright and early at 7:30 am on the 29th of March at Leermansdrift Farm, just outside of Wittedrift, for our birding walk. The walk took us through a fantastic mix of habitats—lush forested areas along a small stream and some open field clearings, all perfect for birdwatching.

Around 35 club members (including our volunteer guides) joined the walk, which we split into two groups, each starting from opposite ends of the circular route. The walk itself was fairly easy, but we did have a small stream crossing that added a bit of a “team-building” twist—some members even ended up with wet feet in the process!

We were fortunate to spot a total of 38 bird species throughout the walk. Afterwards, we gathered under the towering pine trees for a leisurely picnic, where we could all relax, socialise, and swap stories about the birds we had spotted. A huge thanks to Gordon and Robyn Smith for letting us explore their stunning farm and making the day so memorable.
